On Oct. 27, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that the state would send observers to monitor U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) election monitors when Californians head to the polls on Nov. 4 for a special election on redistricting. The DOJ’s decision follows a formal request from California Republicans.

“There will be observers of the so-called election monitors that the DOJ is sending,” Bonta told reporters, according to KCRA Sacramento. “They will not be allowed to interfere in ways that the law prohibits.”

Bonta expressed concerns that the federal election monitors sent by President Trump’s DOJ could be used to intimidate voters or influence election results, and indicated he would take measures to ensure that does not happen.
