General Motors Canada plans to cut shifts at its Oshawa assembly plant, moving from three shifts to two due to updated demand forecasts and trade conditions. The union Unifor criticized GM’s decision as a reckless decision that deals a direct blow to our members and threatens to ripple through the entire auto parts supplier network.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford described the announcement as extremely tough news for autoworkers and noted GM’s commitment to the Oshawa plant. U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian-built vehicles on April 3, leading to GM’s adjustments.
