Just days after President Donald Trump said he would consider sending National Guard troops to Chicago to help with crime, Mayor Brandon Johnson avoided answering questions about whether an increased police presence in the city would help. During the interview on MSNBC, Johnson said, “It’s not just policing alone.”

When asked if an additional 5,000 officers in the city could make a difference, Johnson cited a statistic from the 1990s. “We had 3,000 more police officers in the 1990s and 900 people [were] being murdered every single year in Chicago,” he said.

The city of Chicago has reported 262 homicides in 2025, marking a decline from the same point in August 2024. Violent crime is also reportedly down 22% in 2025.
