Chief Justice John Roberts defended judicial independence. He said it is necessary to “check the excesses of the Congress or the executive.”
Roberts emphasized that “judicial independence is crucial” at a gathering of judges and lawyers.
He noted that the Constitution’s creation of three co-equal branches relies on an independent judiciary. He said “innovation doesn’t work if the judiciary is not independent.”
In response to calls for impeachment of judges, Roberts said, “Impeachment is not how you register disagreement with a decision.”
