In the District of Columbia, Children’s National Hospital announced that it will end medication-based gender interventions for minors, effective Aug. 30, 2025. Amid mounting legal pressure, including subpoenas and federal orders, the hospital cited risks behind its decision.
Following the announcement, providers will no longer evaluate medication needs or monitor labs, while mental health services remain available and teams “are working directly with families of current patients to support them,” the message said. Meanwhile, advocacy groups have secured litigation, while Ben Takai of Metro DC PFLAG called the change sad and warned of minority bullying.
Similar moves by Children’s Hospital Los Angeles closing its program by July 22 and Stanford Medicine halting surgeries in June underscore a national retreat from gender-affirming care under federal pressure.
