China claimed it had successfully tested non-nuclear hydrogen bombs, according to a report by the South China Morning Post. As a new production facility scales up material output, the magnesium hydride-based explosive generates ultra-hot, long-lasting fireballs with potential military applications, the report said.
The report said the hydrogen-based explosive device generated “devastating chemical chain reactions without using any nuclear materials.”
The researchers behind the study attributed the success to using magnesium hydride. As Interesting Engineering explained, it is essentially hydrogen in solid form.
