Container shipments from China to the U.S. surged nearly 300% in early May, reaching 21,530 TEU following a truce in tariff hikes during Geneva negotiations. The U.S. agreed to reduce tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while China cut tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%, effective for 90 days.

China’s state-backed Global Times expressed concern that the 90-day tariff agreement was too short and urged for a longer cooperative period.

Analysts noted that specifics on non-tariff barriers from China remain unclear, and China may want flexibility in future negotiations.
