China’s purchases stall after Trump’s tariff threat on buyers of Venezuelan oil

China’s oil trade with Venezuela has stalled after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened a 25% tariff on goods from countries buying from Venezuela, effective April 2, 2025. Chinese traders are uncertain about purchasing oil, as they await direction from Beijing following Trump’s executive order.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that China firmly opposes U.S. unilateral sanctions, and views them as interference in internal affairs. Industry insiders believe that unless Beijing intervenes, Chinese buyers will likely find ways to continue purchasing Venezuelan oil despite the uncertainty.
