Union Gospel Mission in Yakima is challenging a Washington state anti-discrimination law in federal appeals court, arguing it forces them to hire LGBTQ+ individuals against their religious beliefs. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is reviewing the case, which was previously dismissed. The mission, with help from Alliance Defending Freedom, claims the law infringes on their religious freedom. This stems from a 2017 lawsuit by Matt Woods, a bisexual man denied a job. The case questions if non-ministerial roles at religious nonprofits can be exempt from discrimination laws.
