Chile’s central and southern coastlines could lose at least 10 beaches over the next decade due to erosion, according to a team of scientists. Erosion rates have doubled in areas already vulnerable in 2023, driven by climate change factors like intense swells, rising sea levels and urbanization.

Storm surges have created sinkholes along Chilean coastlines, threatening the survival of local communities and small businesses in places where some beaches have already disappeared.
