A defense spending bill aimed at funding military personnel during the government shutdown failed in the Senate on Thursday after Democrats blocked it. The vote fell short at 50–44, well under the 60 votes required to move forward.
Just three Democrats, including Sen. John Fetterman, voted in favor, while most of the party withheld support. Democrats said they would not back the standalone defense measure without more comprehensive guarantees on long-term government funding.
“It’s always been unacceptable to Democrats to do the defense bill without other bills that have so many things that are important to the American people in terms of healthcare, in terms of housing, in terms of safety,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said. Meanwhile, Majority Leader John Thune criticized Democrats for what he described as a failure to stand by the military during a time of uncertainty, calling the move “deeply disappointing.”
