On Oct. 13, Hamas freed its remaining hostages from captivity and made arrangements for the transfer of deceased hostages back to their families in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. Observers celebrated the exchange as a crucial step towards a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and ultimately towards a more permanent peace agreement in the larger Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

As an important part of the agreement, urgent humanitarian aid supplies were also allowed into Gaza.

Democratic leaders widely celebrated the achievement. Democrats who praised the deal or thanked the Trump administration for their efforts included former President Bill Clinton, former President Joe Biden, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, among others.

“I commend the enormous advocacy of the tireless hostage families, President Trump, his administration, and all who helped make this moment happen,” Sen. Schumer said, according to The Hill.

“President Trump and his administration, Qatar, and other regional actors deserve great credit for keeping everyone engaged until the agreement was reached,” Clinton added.

“I am deeply grateful and relieved that this day has come…I commend President Trump and his team for their work to get a renewed ceasefire deal over the finish line,” Biden wrote.
