11 Democratic U.S. senators wrote to top U.S. immigration officials on Oct. 30 seeking information on what they called a “near-total secrecy” about conditions onboard deportation flights. The letter cites “serious human rights concerns,” including the use of full-body restraints on passengers for hours at a time, according to The Associated Press (AP).
The senators accused ICE and DHS of acting outside the law and without any transparency, oversight or accountability.

Aside from concerns about human rights and dignity, the controversial full-body restraints have also played a role in deaths in some instances. The AP identified at least 12 cases over the last decade where the forceful restraints were identified during the autopsy process as a factor in death.
Neither ICE nor DHS responded to the AP for comment.
