The Department of Homeland Security says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) does not target schools in its operations. Assistant Tricia McLaughlin said the notion is a scare tactic concocted by media outlets.

“The media is sadly attempting to create a climate of fear and smear law enforcement. These smears are contributing to our ICE law enforcement officers facing 1,000% increase in assaults against them,” McLaughlin said. She also said, “criminals are no longer able to hide in America’s schools to avoid arrest.”

According to a statement by DHS, ICE is allowed to enter schools with discretion at the behest of the agency to enforce “immigration laws and catch illegal aliens.”

Meanwhile, California lawmakers passed a bill requiring schools to notify teachers and families when ICE agents are on school grounds.
