El Salvador proposes prisoner swap with Venezuela

29% left coverage18% right coverage

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele proposed a prisoner swap with Venezuela on Sunday, April 20. He suggested he would exchange Venezuelan deportees from the United States that his government has kept imprisoned for what he called “political prisoners” in Venezuela.

Venezuela pushed back against the proposal, demanding legal records of those detained and accusing El Salvador of violating human rights.

The U.S. has backed El Salvador’s detentions, reportedly paying the Central American nation $6 million to accept deportations. However, courts recently paused further deportations amid legal and political backlash.
