Energy Department awards $2.2B to strengthen the electrical grid and add clean power

The Department of Energy has announced it will be awarding $2.2 billion for a total of eight projects spanning across 18 states. The money will be used to improve the electrical grid to stand up to extreme weather as well as supporting clean electricity.

The funding is set to create over 600 miles of new transmission lines. It will also upgrade 400 miles of existing lines.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm emphasized that it is an important investment because it will provide reliable electricity for at least 56 million homes and businesses.
