The Department of Energy announced on Sept. 24 that it is aiming to claw back around $13 billion in funding that Congress previously allocated. The administration did not specify exactly where the money was coming from or to what alternative purposes the money might be reallocated.

But Energy Secretary Chris Wright reportedly later said at a New York Times event that the seized funds would aim to subsidize wind, solar and other renewable energy projects. Much of the funding had originally been allocated towards those same purposes.
Wright’s statement is at odds with a Department of Energy press release, which stated that the funds would be returned “to the American taxpayer.”
