Former U.S. Marine Corps pilot Daniel Duggan appeared in federal court in Canberra, Australia, on Thursday to appeal his extradition to the United States. Duggan stands accused of training Chinese military pilots in South Africa in 2012 without being granted the necessary permission, and for receiving unauthorized payments for those services.

Duggan has been held in maximum security prison since his arrest in 2022, but his lawyers say the law used to prosecute him was not in force at the time of his arrest.

Duggan renounced his American citizenship and moved to Australia, where he now has a family and six children. Duggan’s wife, Saffrine Duggan, told reporters: “My husband broke no Australian law and he was an Australian citizen when the alleged pilot training occurred.”

The family maintains that Duggan is being used as a political pawn in the geopolitical contest between the United States and China, according to AP News.
