On Thursday, July 17, Mark Dial was granted immediate parole after being sentenced to 9½ months to two years for the fatal shooting of Eddie Irizarry during a Kensington traffic stop. The conviction encompassed multiple charges after a jury found he acted unreasonably in firing six shots within seconds.

According to the footage, body camera video shows less than 10 seconds elapsed before fatal shots, contrasting the initial claim that Irizarry lunged with a knife. Irizarry’s family and District Attorney Larry Krasner condemned the sentence as unjust, with Krasner saying, “It’s way below the bottom end of the sentencing guidelines.”

Meanwhile, Irizarry’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Dial, Morris, the police department and the city, while attorney Brian McMonagle said they are reviewing a potential appeal.
