The FBI has shut down an anti-corruption team that included agents who had investigated GOP figures and organizations in relation to the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol attack. Documents show that the agents may have investigated over 150 Republicans or Republican-leaning groups as part of the agency’s effort to piece together more intelligence on the insurrection and its related crimes.
GOP House figures have called the investigations politically motivated and claimed that agents used the insurrection as an excuse to investigate “the entire Republican political apparatus.”

The agents defended their work in response, saying that they had “specific and articulable facts” of probable crimes.
