According to disclosures by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the Arctic Frost investigation was formally opened in April 2022 with the approval of former U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, and FBI Director Christopher Wray.  The probe initially aimed to examine alleged efforts tied to the 2020 election and the use of alternate electors.

Documents released by Grassley indicate that the FBI sought phone data from eight Republican senators and a House member. The investigation reportedly also targeted nearly 100 Republican-linked groups and individuals.

Grassley has characterized the probe as a misuse of government authority, going so far as to call it “arguably worse than Watergate.” He has committed to continuing oversight, demanding more records from the FBI and the Justice Department to review the full extent of the investigation.
