Unions representing workers at two federal services — the National Weather Service and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office — sued President Donald Trump on Tuesday. They filed the lawsuit in response to Trump’s executive order issued last week, which sought to end collective bargaining rights at those and other federal agencies, including NASA.

Trump cited an exemption that the White House says empowers him to use national security justifications to end collective bargaining rights for some federal employees.

Parties filing the suit say that the executive order aims to punish federal employees for speaking out against Trump administration policies that they viewed as dangerous or harmful, and that this has nothing to do with national security. Two of the unions involved stated that the employees they represent are not involved with U.S. national security.
