The Laken Riley Act, requiring federal immigration officials to detain those illegally in the country who also have theft-related crimes, passed the House with a 264-159 vote. The bill is now on its way to the Senate.
Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman criticized the 159 Democrats who opposed the act, stating that deporting those in the country illegally with criminal records should not be controversial.
Fetterman is the bill’s sole Senate Democrat co-sponsor.
Laken Riley’s family expressed that the legislation is crucial for saving innocent lives, highlighting the tragedy of her murder by someone who illegally entered the country.
