For the first time, U.S. troops have detained individuals within military areas established along the U.S.-Mexico border. It’s a move stemming from the Trump administration’s immigration initiatives.
Designated as extensions of military bases, these areas permit the temporary detainment of migrants until civilian authorities take over.
Army spokesperson Major Geoffrey Carmichael told Devdiscourse that initial detentions involved three people near Santa Teresa, New Mexico.
Civil rights lawyers have pushed back on military buffer zones along the border, claiming it is unconstitutional to use U.S. troops for simple arrests.
