New College of Florida got rid of hundreds of books, many of which were about LGBTQ+ issues, race and women’s rights. A social media post from a Sarasota Herald-Tribune reporter showed the removed and discarded books.
This comes after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis enacted a law that bans state funding for diversity programs. The caused Florida schools to remove books that came from the college’s gender studies program, which was previously discontinued.
Bacardi Jackson of the Florida ACLU condemned the decisions to get rid of books, calling it a “cultural purge.”
