Florida school districts have removed hundreds of books from libraries, according to the Florida Department of Education’s latest list. The 2023-2024 removal list includes works by notable authors and titles facing censorship.
Legal challenges have arisen for restricting book access, notably in Escambia County, sued by PEN America and Penguin Random House. Laws recently approved have seen parents and officials challenge specific books in schools, leading to many of these books being taken off shelves. Florida officials say no books are being banned, but sexually explicit materials are being removed from schools.
