Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan officially announced he’s joining the Democratic Party in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial on Tuesday, Aug. 7. Duncan’s party switch follows years of growing disagreements over Medicaid, immigration and gun control, and comes seven months after his expulsion from the Republican Party.
He previously condemned Republican policies, describing Trump’s mass deportation campaign as “heartless” and “pointless,” and expressed concern over welfare reductions enacted through a major spending bill.
Duncan highlighted that 11.4% of Georgians lack health insurance, mostly due to affordability and eligibility issues, and called for more meaningful gun legislation beyond minor reforms.
Duncan’s shift signals waning hope in the GOP among moderates, has drawn support from Democrats and he did not rule out running for higher office as a Democrat.
