President Donald Trump threatened to revoke the nationality of U.S. citizens committing certain crimes and deport them, including those born in the United States. After visiting a migrant detention facility, Trump stated that citizens who commit violent crimes could be deported, referring to them as “bad people.”
Ruth Ben-Ghiat criticized Trump’s rhetoric, calling it “chilling” and noting that this could mark a troubling shift toward authoritarianism.
Legal experts pointed out that deportation applies only to non-citizens, further stating that the 14th Amendment protects natural-born citizens.
