Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz., introduced a bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Nick Shirley, in recognition of his video on alleged daycare fraud in Minnesota. The independent journalist and YouTube personality posted a controversial video in December, in which he and whistleblower David Hoch visited childcare centers across the Twin Cities.

The video received over 3.3 million views on YouTube and drew attention from Elon Musk and Vice President JD Vance.

Investigations suggest Minnesota could have lost as much as $9 billion to fraud operations similar to those shown in the footage. Crane said Shirley’s reporting spurred congressional probes into state social service programs.

On Monday, Health and Human Services froze federal child care funding to Minnesota, and the FBI surged investigators. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced he will not seek reelection to address the alleged fraud.
