Two Burlington residents, supported by a national conservative group, are suing the city over a recent charter change permitting noncitizen voting in local elections. The Republican National Committee-supported lawsuit was filed to ensure only citizens can vote in Burlington, Vermont’s municipal elections after residents approved the change allowing noncitizen participation in 2023. Vermont’s Republican governor initially vetoed the measure, but the state legislature overrode his veto. Fewer than 50 people took advantage of the policy during the 2023 local elections, according to a city official.
