On Thursday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom took a step back from a post released by his press office calling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “state-sponsored terrorism.” On an episode of his podcast interviewing Ben Shapiro, Newsom said he disagreed with that sentiment.

While the two continued their conversation, Newsom also said he did not believe that ICE should be abolished.

The governor said his administration has partially cooperated with ICE, saying the state has participated in over 10,000 transfers and that he has vetoed bills that would limit that work.

Newsom has walked back his stance on many progressive policies as he continues to tease a potential 2028 presidential run.
