During the opening event of her New York City book tour, Kamala Harris was met with protests in which some attendees accused her of complicity in “genocide” in Gaza. In response, Harris urged the crowd to “take the temperature down,” in an attempt to quell tension in the room.

She spoke on her long-standing advocacy for Palestinians, and acknowledged that during her tenure as vice president, she had faced internal pushback from the Biden administration for speaking candidly about Gaza. Despite the disruptions, she expressed empathy and said that she understood the protesters’ frustration, emphasizing how deeply she felt about the situation in Gaza.

“Unlike the current president of the United States, I understand what’s happening right now in Gaza,” she said. “What is happening to the Palestinian people is outrageous, and it breaks my heart.”
