Govs. Tim Walz, Kathy Hochul and JB Pritzker will testify on June 12 before the Republican-led House Oversight Committee about sanctuary city policies in Minnesota, New York and Illinois. The hearing follows an investigation launched in January to examine if sanctuary jurisdictions shield undocumented immigrants, amid calls for the governors to provide documents on their states’ policies.
The governors represent states with laws limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, such as Illinois’ bipartisan Trust Act, which restricts local police from honoring ICE detainer requests without court orders.
Republican chairman James Comer criticized these states for shielding illegal immigrants with criminal records instead of focusing on the safety of U.S. Citizens. At the same time, Pritzker vowed to use all available platforms to oppose their harsh policies.
The hearing may increase political pressure on the governors and highlight partisan divisions over immigration enforcement and sanctuary policies in key states.
