President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit seeking $230 million from the Department of Justice for investigations during his presidency and after the 2020 election loss. Two claims, one relating to the federal probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, and another in 2024 related to the FBI’s search of his Mar-a-Lago estate and the classified-documents case, were filed.

Members of the House Judiciary and Oversight committees, led by Rep. Jamie Raskin and Rep. Robert Garcia, have opened an investigation into the request, saying that it may violate the Constitution’s Domestic Emoluments clause. The article bars a president from receiving payments beyond their salary.

Lawmakers have requested copies of the claims and related correspondence, and they’ve flagged concerns about conflicts of interest since some DOJ officials reviewing the claims were previously Trump’s personal attorneys.
