U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents carried out an operation Thursday near an event hosted by California Gov. Gavin Newsom focused on redistricting. Authorities confirmed at least one individual was taken into custody.

Newsom’s event was a response to efforts by Texas Republicans to redraw congressional maps, which some say would benefit President Donald Trump. During the event, he introduced the “Election Rigging Response Act” and urged Californians to participate in a special election on Nov. 4 to revise district boundaries.

Newsom criticized the ICE operation as politically motivated. “Donald Trump, you have poked the bear. We will punch back,” he said.
