U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday, July 31, that India’s continued purchases of Russian oil despite international sanctions and boycotts against Russia following Putin’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine are an ongoing “point of irritation” in U.S.-India relations. Rubio expressed disappointment over India’s oil imports, saying that the purchases help sustain Moscow’s war against Ukraine, and said that India has plenty of other legitimate suppliers to import from.

India has maintained that its domestic energy demands justify the imports.
