The proposed layoffs would have cut roughly one-quarter of U.S. National Park Service regional staff nationwide.

Current and former staff warned they were already so understaffed prior to the proposed layoffs that they were leaving U.S. parks and forests vulnerable to permanent damages, according to The Missouri Independent.

Hundreds of layoffs had also been planned for the Department of Commerce and the Department of Health and Human Services, according to court records.
