Islam outpaced all other religions in population growth from 2010 to 2020, rising by 327 million, according to Pew Research. The number of Christians increased by 122 million, resulting in a global total of 2.3 billion Christians in 2020.
This growth was driven by high Muslim fertility rates and shifts in Christian populations, including widespread disaffiliation in Western Europe and the U.S.
Religiously unaffiliated people rose 12% to 172 million, making up 24.2% of the world population, as many left Christian identities, especially in the U.S.
