Mandla Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, was deported from Israel after being detained for six days by IDF officials during the Global Sumud flotilla mission. At least five other South African activists were detained and their vessels were intercepted in international waters, unable to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Two Muslim women in the group reported that their hijabs were forcibly removed, that they were stripped naked in front of Israeli soldiers and that this treatment did not happen to other detained women. Mandela described the mission as peaceful and nonviolent.
“We were handcuffed with cable ties tied tightly behind our backs, taken off our boats, put on the platform and paraded for all to see,” Mandela said. Despite what they say was a brutal experience, Mandla Mandela said the group is determined to carry out its mission of aid efforts in support of the Palestinian people.
