A joint investigation by three news outlets has uncovered Israeli military intelligence indicating around 83% of those killed in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023 were civilians. That would put the civilian death toll in Gaza just below the rate of civilians killed in recent genocides and ethnic cleansing campaigns like those in Srebrenica in 1992-95, where around 92% of victims were civilians.

In the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, for comparison, between 10%-21% of Ukrainians killed were civilians, according to the report.

The report comes as the United Nations formally declares a famine in Gaza and warns of the risk of mass starvation across Gaza unless urgent humanitarian aid is allowed in.

The Israeli military, meanwhile, is moving forward with its assault on Gaza City.
