Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., at a Senate hearing Thursday blamed Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison for the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minnesota.

Johnson said Minnesota officials increased tensions as the Trump administration ramped up its immigration operation in the state.

“I, as a government official, would have said, ‘Back off. Let us work with ICE. Let’s cooperate with them. Let’s see if we can de-escalate this,’” Johnson said. “But Attorney General, you did the exact opposite, and two people are dead because you encouraged them to put themselves in harm’s way.”

Ellison responded by saying everything Johnson said was untrue.

“It was a nice theatrical performance, but it was all lies,” he said.
