Photojournalist Mariam Dagga was killed Monday by an Israeli strike on Nasser Hospital in Gaza. The strike killed 22 people, including five reporters.

The attack was what’s called a double strike, where military forces strike a target, wait for emergency responders and journalists to show up, and then hit it again, killing more people on the second strike.

Israel’s military said it targeted a Hamas surveillance camera at the hospital, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied that the double strikes were deliberate, calling them a “tragic mishap.”

Since the war reignited on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel has killed a record-high number of journalists, and has bombed at least 33 hospitals in Gaza, according to the World Health Organization.

Dagga’s final photographs depicted the hospital’s damaged stairwell. A letter she had penned shortly before her death, describing her as a devoted mother armed only with her camera, was shared with the United Nations Security Council.
