U.S. District Judge Judith Levy dismissed a lawsuit against Detroit police on August 5 filed by the victim of a wrongful arrest. The woman, Porcha Woodruff of Detroit, Michigan, had been arrested in part as a result of faulty facial recognition technology.
Woodruff, who was eight months pregnant at the time, was held in detention for 10 hours following her wrongful arrest.

The judge found that the arresting officer was unaware of the flawed facial recognition technology and could not have known that Woodruff was not a legitimate suspect.
The city of Detroit previously settled a separate lawsuit by a victim of wrongful shoplifting allegations in another case involving faulty facial recognition technology.
Detroit police have since changed how they rely on facial recognition technology to reduce their liability and mitigate any further wrongful arrests.
