The Trump administration has been ordered to restore $500 million in medical research grants to the University of California, Los Angeles. In August, the university announced that funds were suspended over alleged civil rights violations related to antisemitism and affirmative action.
The Trump administration had targeted several institutions that it said were overrun by antisemitism and liberalism. However, some universities, like Columbia and Brown, which faced similar accusations, struck deals with the administration to retain funding.
A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration likely violated the Administrative Procedure Act, which calls for specific explanations for funding cuts. The reinstated funds will support research efforts in several studies, including treatments for Parkinson’s disease, cancer recovery and cell regeneration in nerves.
