A federal judge rejected a request to open early voting sites at three North Carolina universities. U.S. District Judge William Osteen upheld the Republican-controlled election boards’ previous decisions to keep those three early in-person voting sites closed.

Students at Western Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University will now have to travel off campus to cast ballots in person if they want to vote early. The College Democrats of North Carolina and some students sued, arguing they placed an undue burden on the right to vote.

Early in-person voting for North Carolina’s March 3 primary begins Thursday. The judge said formally backing efforts to open the sites so close to voting could risk confusion.

Early voting sites at Western Carolina University, UNC Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University will all remain closed for early voting, pending an appeal.
