A new NPR/Ipsos poll reveals that only 28% of Americans support ending birthright citizenship, which is under Supreme Court review. This debate over birthright citizenship stems from President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at ending the policy embedded in the 14th Amendment, ratified after the Civil War.

Poll results also show 53% oppose ending birthright citizenship, while legal scholars widely agree that a constitutional amendment, not an executive order, would be required to change it.

Approximately 45% of Americans believe First Amendment protections should apply to immigrants, regardless of their legal status.
