Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach has filed charges against Coldwater Mayor Joe Ceballos, alleging that he voted illegally in multiple elections between 2022 and 2024. According to Kobach’s office, Ceballos is a lawful permanent resident originally from Mexico but not a U.S. citizen.
He faces three counts of voting without being qualified and three counts of election perjury, charges that could carry a combined penalty of more than five years in prison if convicted. Kobach noted that while Kansas law requires city officials, including mayors, to be U.S. citizens, violating that eligibility rule itself is not a criminal offense.
Ceballos remains on the ballot for re-election, though results have not yet been certified. His first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 3.
