National Guard troops arrived in Chicago overnight on Oct. 8. They number around 500 total, including 300 federalized troops from Illinois plus another 200 from Texas. Their initial deployment is set to last for two months.

The State of Illinois filed a lawsuit against the federal government to block the deployment, calling it illegal and unconstitutional. Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson both strongly oppose the deployment and view it as illegal.

Mayor Karen Katrina Thompson, whose Village of Broadview received 45 troops, called the deployment “a military occupation,” according to CBS News. Thompson’s allegation echoes similar statements — in some cases verbatim — from state and local officials in other cities that have seen National Guard deployments, including Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

The City of Broadview added, however, that the deployment was been calm and peaceful on the first night, and expressed hope that the deployed troops would remain civil and professional in the days ahead.
