Former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., criticized Elon Musk for questioning her loyalty to the U.S. after he amplified a post linking her to the U.S. Agency for International Development and President Donald Trump’s impeachment. Musk’s post suggested Cheney’s role in USAID influenced her political actions against Trump, as he targets the agency for budget cuts.

Cheney responded, affirming her pride in her work with USAID and America’s historical efforts during the Cold War. However, she also called attention to Musk’s citizenship, questioning it.

“Damn right, @Elon. I’m proud of what America did to win the Cold War, defeat Soviet communism, and defend democracy,” she said. “Our nation stood for freedom. You may be unfamiliar with that part of our history since you weren’t yet an American citizen.”

The exchange highlighted ongoing tensions between Cheney, Trump and Musk regarding USAID’s future and federal budget priorities.
