U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick called Elon Musk’s plan for running the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) backward. “I thought Elon got caught up in other people’s objectives,” he said.

Lutnick said the agency should have prioritized abuse, fraud and waste over time. Instead, Musk conducted sweeping cuts to the government, firing at least 200,000 federal workers across various agencies.

Lutnick noted that instead of mass firings, slashing spending would have been a better strategy for Musk. He pointed to a Biden-era program that awarded $7.4 billion to private nonprofits to research semiconductors as an area of government waste.
